Why We Do What We Do at the Colorado Neurodiversity Chamber of Commerce
At the Colorado Neurodiversity Chamber of Commerce (CNDCC), our mission is rooted in the stark reality of neurodivergent workers’ experiences in the workforce. With approximately 20% of the population—or 1 in 5 people—identified as neurodivergent, the need for inclusive practices and support is more pressing than ever.
The Unemployment Crisis
The statistics paint a troubling picture. Between 30-40% of neurodivergent adults are unemployed, and an alarming 85% of autistic college graduates find themselves without jobs. These figures reflect not just individual struggles but a systemic issue that the CNDCC is dedicated to addressing. Our work aims to change these statistics by fostering environments that embrace neurodiversity and support individuals in finding meaningful employment.
Disclosure and Support
Among those who are employed, many face significant barriers. A staggering 50% of employed neurodivergent individuals disclose their condition only after being hired, with some choosing not to disclose at all. The fear of negative repercussions is real; 59% of neurodivergent adults worry that revealing their condition could harm their career prospects. This anxiety is compounded by a pervasive stigma: 60% feel uncomfortable asking for support at work, and nearly 49% don’t know who to approach for accommodations.
The statistics become even more concerning when we consider that 23% of individuals surveyed have experienced job loss or demotion after requesting accommodations. Such experiences highlight the urgent need for workplaces to cultivate an environment of understanding and support.
The Impact of Masking
Many neurodivergent individuals resort to “masking”—hiding their true selves to fit in, which can lead to severe burnout, anxiety, depression, and other challenges. This practice underscores the necessity of creating spaces where people can be authentic without fear of judgment or repercussion.
A Call for Change
The CNDCC is committed to changing these narratives. Neurodiversity has long been overlooked in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) efforts, but we are determined to shift this perspective. Our initiatives aim to educate businesses about the value of neurodiversity and provide resources that empower neurodivergent individuals to thrive in the workplace.
Season of Inclusion - Build Your Legacy Campaign
As we embark on our Season of Inclusion, we invite you to join us in our Build Your Legacy campaign. This initiative aims to raise funds that will directly support our programs and resources designed to uplift neurodivergent individuals in Colorado. Your contributions will help us expand our outreach, provide essential training for businesses, and develop more opportunities for neurodivergent individuals to connect and succeed.
By raising awareness, advocating for policy changes, and fostering community support, we strive to create a future where neurodivergent individuals can access opportunities without fear or stigma. Together, we can change the landscape of employment for neurodivergent individuals and ensure that everyone has a chance to succeed.
